T=0: The Decision
Toronto 1-bedroom condo, CAD $2,200/month, 640 sq ft, shared hallway with 8 other units. I had been there four years and the building felt smaller every year. Same UX research job, fully remote since 2021.
Ran the numbers on Halifax: 2-bed house, CAD $1,600/month to rent, CAD $380k to buy. The Toronto condo I was renting was worth $680k. I could not afford to stay and could not afford to leave fast enough.
More space. Eventually, property.
6 Months Out
Halifax is beautiful in a way I did not anticipate — the harbour, the architecture, the particular light in October. The pace is genuinely slower. At month 3 I found that disconcerting. At month 6 I understood it was the point.
